Prayer and Medical Science: A prayer for healing

For centuries, people have offered prayers for the sick, often with surprising results. Now, medical research has shown proof that healing prayers have positive results for the sick. When we meditate or pray to that external power, there is a feeling of self-content and satisfaction. This is the power that resides in a prayer. It heals not only our mind and body, but also cleanses our soul.
When you are faced with a disease, you desire to cry out to the Almighty for healing. It is usually our hopelessness that compels us to seek a supernatural source to alleviate our illness or disease.
"We all know that human beings are social animals. They need a psychological support, hence they believe in some external power. Praying gives us some sense of security and also help our mind to be calm. We believe in receiving security and faith from a higher power above. This is because of human temperament," says Dr Rachna Singh, lifestyle management expert, Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon.
Physicians give the same medication to two different patients with the same type of medical problem or perform similar operations on two patients otherwise at the same risk and one will survive and the other one doesn't. It is more than luck.
Spiritual gurus say the intention of closed eyes during prayer is to quiet the mind whereas placing two hands together during prayer is to quiet the physical body's activities. When the mind and hands are silenced, the spirit is allowed a more focused communication with a place of knowing. This knowing place may be called God, higher self, nature, or whatever term you like.
Prayer may include specific forms like praise, requesting guidance or assistance, confessing sins, as an act of reparation or an expression of one's thoughts and emotions. Praying can be done in public, as a group, or in private. The words used in prayer may take the form of intercession, a hymn, incantation, words of gratitude, or a spontaneous utterance in the person's praying words.
Most religions in the world involve prayer in one way or another in their rituals. Although in many cases the act of prayer is ritualised and must be followed through a sometimes strict sequence of actions (even going as far as restricting who may pray), some religions teach that prayer can be done spontaneously by anyone at any moment.
Did you know the facts about Prayer and Medical Science?
  • Medical science has proven the healing benefits of prayer.
  • More than 60 medical schools in America are now teaching courses on religious and spiritual issues, including the benefits of prayer.
  • The American Cancer Society sites the positive effect of prayer on physical health.
Medical benefits of ritualistic Muslim Prayer called Salah or Salat in Arabic
Salat has been made compulsory on all believers in all situations. It is an activity which cannot be neglected under any circumstance. This obligation on us should not be regarded as a burden, but rather it should be cherished and appreciated. It is said that a pious person is one who enjoys their prayer.
The Muslims who reach the age of puberty (with exceptions of: menstruating, being to ill or experiencing post-partum bleeding) have to pray to Allah (SWT) minimum five times a day. This Arabic word "Salah," doesn't only mean "prayer," because "pray" basically means to address a prayer to God or another deity, according to the Oxford Dictionary. "Salah," is a word with a broad meaning, which doesn't only mean prayer, but also means goodness, righteousness and godliness. In Salah, we not only ask from Allah (SWT) but we also thank Him, praise Him and at the same time receive guidance from Him. Salah in the true sense is programming or conditioning. The prayer conditions us to stay away from forbidden and shameful actions, and encourages us to do righteous and sensible actions. Since we humans have no free will, this conditioning will help us and enable us to stay away from forbidden things, and enjoin on what is not forbidden. A healthy body requires three meals a day. Similarly, the spiritual soul requires five times Salah a day.
Besides attaining spiritual upliftment from performing one's salat, one may also gain many physical and psychological benefits. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) is recorded in a hadith (Ibn Majah) stating that prayer is a cure for many diseases. The wisdom in this claim can be understood when assessing the physical benefits of the act of prayer.
The process of performing salat expects certain movements and actions, these actions performed at least five times a day have been found to equate to jogging or walking at a rate of three miles an hour. This is a basic level of exercise strongly advocated by doctors and members of the medical fraternity on a whole. The importance of exercise is undeniable, with potential benefits to the cardiac, respiratory, skeletal and muscular system. The dynamics of salat contribute to the improvement of all of these systems, with specific emphasis on the muscular and cardiac systems. Before we delve into detail discussion, it needs to be noted that the purpose of performing salaat should not be to obtain health benefits, but rather to fulfill a religious requirement. The fact that there are physical benefits associated with prayer comes as a blessing.
In salah, when we do Ruku that is: bow down, extra blood flows into the upper part of the body. The spine becomes supple and flexible, while the spinal nerves are nourished. This relieves backache and pain. This is a good posture for flatulence. Stretches lower back, thighs, and calves while blood gets pumped into the upper torso. Bowing position tones stomach muscles, abdomen and kidneys. When we come back to the standing position (after Ruku), the blood which has entered into the upper part of the body, comes back to normal and the body is relaxed. As a result, this blood carries away toxins and releases tension.
When we do Sujud, which is basically the prostration to the ground with are eight parts of the body touching the floor, the forehead in on the ground which is the best position of salah. It is the most relevant part of salah. Daily, the human beings are propounded by electrostatic charges from the atmosphere, which gets perspirated in the central nervous system, which gets super saturated. These extra electrostatic charges, have to be dissipated and discharged, otherwise you will have: headache, neck ache, muscles spasms, etc. No wonder people regularly take tranquillizers and drugs, to relieve the pain. These electrostatic charges are dissipated and discharged, when the frontal lobe of the brain is put on the ground, in sujud. There is dominance of the frontal lobe, and the thinking capacity of the brain is not on the top of the brain, but in the frontal lobe. In doing sujud, there is less chance of getting: headache, spasms, aches, etc due to the fact that the electrostatic charges are dissipated and discharged. Moreover, the sujud allows extra blood supply to enter the brain, which enables the brain to become more healthier, plus has a positive effect on the memory, vision, hearing, concentration and the psyche. In addition, extra blood flows into the skin, neck and face, which increases the circulation of the blood of the skin, neck and face, which is very healthy especially in the cold seasons. Also, allows mental toxins to be cleaned by blood. This is also very good for the brain. This prevents diseases, such as: Fibromyalgia (Fibrositis) and chilblains. During the sujud, there is drainage of the Paranasal sinuses, this there is less chances of getting sinusitis, which consists of inflammation of the linings of the sinuses that surround the nose. In certain forms of yoga, some adherents stand on their heads for the purpose of blood flowing to the brain, which we Muslims have been doing for centuries.
Normally during the day, the human beings have an upright posture. The maxillaris sinus, the opening is in the upper medium part. The secretions cannot be drained, due to the upright posture which people have. Therefore when you do sujud, there is drainage of the maxillaris sinus, which is very healthy, and decreases the chances of infections occurring. It also causes drainage of secretion of the frontal sinus, ethmoid sinus as well as the sphenoid sinus. This all decreases the chances of a person getting sinusitis. Moreover, someone who has sinusitis, the sujud is a natural treatment. The sujud position is also a natural treatment for a person suffering from bronchitis, which is inflammation in the lungs. The sujud position also causes drainage of the secretion of the bronchial tree, thus prevents bronchitis. It prevents the accumulation of the secretion in the bronchial tree. It is also helpful in other pulmonary (lung) diseases, in which secretion are acclimated. Besides this, other things like: dust and bacteria can accumulate, which the sujud is prevention from.
Normally when you breathe, only 2/3 of the lung capacity is used. The remaining 1/3 of the lung capacity, the air remains in. Therefore, it is only 2/3 of air which comes in as fresh air, when you breathe and 2/3 goes out. The remaining 1/3 is called as: residual air. When you do sujud, the abdominal viscera, they press against the diaphragm. The diaphragm presses against the lower lobes of the lungs, which causes the person to exhale the 1/3 residual air. Once this residual air goes out, more fresh air comes in, which is responsible for a healthy lung. When you do sujud, due to the decrease of the gravitational force, there is extra venous return from the abdominal organs. Therefore, the extra venous return (volume of blood returning to the right atrium of the heart) is increased, which makes the heart healthy. This also supplies fresh blood to all body tissues. In the sujud, the weight is concentrated on the knees, and your legs are flexed. The soleus and the gastrocnemius muscles (muscles of the leg) are also called the peripheral heart, because it has an extensive venous return, which is responsible from increasing venous return, of the lower heart of the body. This also causes relaxation in lower half of the body.
In sujud, the knees are touching the floor, including the hands and forehead. This posture is helpful in diseases of the cervical spine, because this helps the intervertebral joints, which allows the spine to move more flexibly. The posture of the sujud is also helpful in cardiac diseases. When a person rises from the sujud from the squatting position, the blood which has flowed into the upper part of the body comes back to normal sea, and the body is relaxed. There is extra blood flowing in the muscles and nerves, of the thigh and the back, so the back muscles of the back are relaxed. It is helpful and useless in constipation and indigestion. It is also helpful for a person suffering from peptic ulcer and other stomach problems. When a person gets up from the squatting position to the standing position, his weight is concentrated on the ball of the feet, which improves the strength of the back muscles, thigh muscles, knee muscles and leg muscles.
The ruku and sujud (bowing down and prostrating to the floor) are great postures against femoral and esophageal hernia. These positions in the prayer are also prophylaxis treatment, of a person suffering from hemorrhoids (inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus) which in layman's terminology is called as: piles. These positions of salah are also helpful in prolapse of the uterus. In sujud, the knees form a right angle allowing the stomach muscles to develop, plus prevents growth of flabbiness in the midsection, and reduces high blood pressure.
When sitting on the knees after sujud, this helps toughen the legs and hips and makes them stronger, ensuring you have more flexibility in joints plus stretching out muscles. It encourages an upright posture, which is good for the spine. In addition, the body returns to even greater relaxation, and the posture assists digestion by forcing the contents of the stomach downwards. Also, since most of the pressure goes to the lower half of the body, the upper half of the body, especially the shoulder and head will be relaxed.
Furthermore, we repeat the sujud within a few seconds after sitting on knees. What this does is cleanses the respiratory circulatory and nervous system. There is also oxygenation of entire body, while sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are relaxed.
Praying the Fajr prayer (dawn prayer) stops long amounts of stillness, as one gets up from sleep. This decreases the chance of gaining diseases like: arthritis, osteoporosis, anemia, etc. Moreover, the dawn prayer prevents you from getting too much sleep and scientific established facts informs us that too much sleep increases the chances of gaining diabetes, heart disease, early death, etc.
Salah is light exercise and is heavy in spiritual deeds, so you getting a 2 in 1 workout. Moreover, in salah, the recitation of the Quran occurs. During the recitation, the sound vibrations of the long vowels: Aa, Thee and oo stimulate the heart, thyroid, pineal gland, pituitary, adrenal glands and lungs, purifying and uplifting them all.
These body movements performed during the salah are an excellent source of exercise for our heart as well. According to a Hadith, Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:
"There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart." (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 49)
It is the heart. A tissue in our body is the cartilage. It is unique in being a living tissue with no direct blood supply. The only way it receives nutrients and oxygen is by movements of the joints. The pumping effect forces blood into the joint area which would otherwise be bypassed. Those who sit at the terminals are in greater danger of ending up with dead cartilage tissues that will subsequently wear away. This will leave us with arthritis, painful joints and paralysis. Bacteria and viruses find safe haven in joints for this reason as no blood cell can get at them and in most cases neither can antibodies. Salah therefore, has many orthopedic benefits for all Muslims.
There is also great wisdom in the timing of the five daily prayers. The salaat which tends to impact most dramatically on the routine of most believers is Fajr, as it is often this prayer which defines the sleeping pattern of the believer. Studies in America have shown that for most people the optimum amount of sleep required is seven hours, while those who exceed this period tend to have slightly shorter life-spans. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) in this respect, like all other areas, provides the best example. It is narrated that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) would sleep soon after Isha and then awake at midnight to perform night prayers. This sleep routine has been adopted in Europe to treat patients with depression, as this structure has been found to improve well-being.
In this article a glimpse of the benefits of prayer has been presented and Insha Allah with this knowledge you may develop a greater appreciation for your salaat.
Do you know? Your Body receives a huge amount of Electromagnetic waves daily!
You get these Electromagnetic waves through the electrical equipments that you use and many other various electrical equipments around you live! Also, through the electrical lights which can not be switched off in certain cases for even an hour!
You are a source which receives huge amounts of electromagnetic waves! In other words, you are charged with electromagnetic waves without realizing it!
Due to this electromagnetic charge! You have headache! You feel uncomfortable! Laziness, dizziness and pain!
What will be the solution for all the above harmful effects?
A non-Muslim Scientist (from Europe) made a research from which he concluded that the best way for the body to remove the positive Electromagnetic charges which hurts the body is: By putting your forehead on the ground more than once, so that the ground will discharge the positive harmful Electromagnetic charges!
This is similar to the grounding of the buildings where any positive electrical signals (Like thunders) would be discharged through the ground. So, put your forehead on the ground to discharge the positive electrical signals!
What makes this research more amazing is that: The best is to put your forehead on the sand.
And it becomes more amazing that: The best way is to put your forehead on the ground while you are positioned to the centre of the Earth! Since you will be able to discharge the electromagnetic signals in a better and more efficient way!
And you will be amazed when you know that Makkah is scientifically proven to be the centre of the Earth! And that Holy Kaaba is the exact centre of the Earth!
So, "Sajdah (Prostration) on Turbah (Piece of Clay for Prostration)" in your prayers (Salah or Salat) is the best way to discharge the harmful electromagnetic signals from your body daily five times!
It is also the ideal way to be very close from the Almighty Allah (SWT) who created this universe in such a creative way! Almighty Allah (SWT) will always ask us to do things because they are helpful and useful for us!
There are cases when we won't know the reason for a certain act, but sooner or later, you might be able to find the reason! In any case, you should trust the Almighty Allah (SWT) and know that whatever you do for Him, is the best for you!
We do not prostrate to discharge the electromagnetic waves, but to obey the Almighty Allah (SWT)! We trust that in His commands, there is always a wisdom! Our trust is because He is the Creator, He knows everything!
However, since a scientific reason is available, it was essential to show it to the people so that they can see that whatever Muslims do, is good for them!

Here’s 4 Hadiths on Laylatul Qadr with some commentary

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whosoever performs Qiyam during Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), with Faith and being hopeful of Allah’s reward, will have his former sins forgiven.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: Qiyam here means what keeps one awake to one’s capacity and for worship and makes one perform Nawafil, impels one to beg pardon for sins from Allah, urges one to praise Him. Specially, if a person performs `Isha prayer and Fajr prayer in congregation, he will hopefully attain all those distinctions which are mentioned in this Hadith.
1190. Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit:

`Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to seclude himself (in the mosque) during the last ten nights of Ramadan. He would say, “Search for Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree) in the last ten nights of Ramadan.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

1192. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to observe I`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and say, “Seek Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree) in the odd nights out of the last ten nights of Ramadan.” [Al-Bukhari].

Commentary: We learn from this Hadith that Lailat-ul-Qadr occurs in any of the five odd nights – 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th – of the last ten nights of Ramadan. Its exact date has not been revealed for the reason that people keep themselves awake for prayer for a larger number of nights. Had its date been fixed, people would have kept awake for prayer only on that night. There is a general belief among the scholars that it is fixed, on the 27th night of Ramadan.

1194. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to strive more in worship during Ramadan than he strove in any other time of the year; and he would devote himself more (in the worship of Allah) in the last ten nights of Ramadan than he strove in earlier part of the month. [Muslim].

Commentary: We learn from this Hadith that:

1. One should concentrate more on prayers and worship on the last ten nights of Ramadan than the first twenty nights, in the same way as one should do more worship in Ramadan than in the other months.

2. One should keep oneself awake for prayer, worship and glorification of Allah in the last ten nights of Ramadan so that one can attain the blessings of Lailat-ul-Qadr.

3. One should also persuade his family members to keep themselves awake for prayer and worship in the last ten odd nights of Ramadan so that they can also make efforts to please Allah.

4. I`tikaf (seclusion in the mosque for prayers) in the last ten days of Ramadan is also a meritorious act for its being a practice of the Prophet (PBUH).

A beautiful Hadith about when Jibrael (Gabriel) came to visit our Prophet (peace be upon him)

On the Authority of Umar: One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journeying were to be seen on him and none of us knew him.

He walked up and sat down by the prophet. Resting his knees against his and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs, he said: “O Muhammed, tell me about Islam”. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammed is the messenger of Allah, to perform the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast in Ramadhan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.” He said:”You have spoken rightly”, and we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. He said: “Then tell me about eman.”He said:”It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny, both the good and the evil thereof.” He said:”You have spoken rightly”. He said: “Then tell me about ehsan.” He said: “It is to worship Allah as though you are seeing Him, and while you see Him not yet truly He sees you”. He said: “Then tell me about the Hour”. He said: “The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner.” He said: “Then tell me about its signs.” He said: “That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute herdsman competing in constructing lofty buildings.”

Then he took himself off and I stayed for a time. Then he said: “O Omar, do you know who the questioner was?” I said: “Allah and His Messenger know best”. He said: “He was Jebreel (Gabriel), who came to you to teach you your religion.”

Read a Dua the Prophet (peace be upon him) made to Allah!

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:

The Prophet used to invoke Allah at night, saying, “O Allah: All the Praises are for You: You are the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth. All the Praises are for You; You are the Maintainer of the Heaven and the Earth and whatever is in them. All the Praises are for You; You are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth. Your Word is the Truth, and Your Promise is the Truth, and the Meeting with You is the Truth, and Paradise is the Truth, and the (Hell) Fire is the Truth, and the Hour is the Truth. O Allah! I surrender myself to You, and I believe in You and I depend upon You, and I repent to You and with You (Your evidences) I stand against my opponents, and to you I leave the judgment (for those who refuse my message). O Allah! Forgive me my sins that I did in the past or will do in the future, and also the sins I did in secret or in public. You are my only God (Whom I worship) and there is no other God for me (i.e. I worship none but You).”

Bukhari Hadith 482

An Amazing Hadith about our Prophet (pbuh) Simply Wonderful!

Narrated Abu Dhar:

Allah’s Apostle (pbuh) said, “While I was at Mecca the roof of my house was opened and Gabriel descended, opened my chest, and washed it with Zam-zam water. Then he brought a golden tray full of wisdom and faith and having poured its contents into my chest, he closed it. Then he took my hand and ascended with me to the nearest heaven, when I reached the nearest heaven, Gabriel said to the gatekeeper of the heaven, ‘Open (the gate).’ The gatekeeper asked, ‘Who is it?’ Gabriel answered: ‘Gabriel.’ He asked, ‘Is there anyone with you?’ Gabriel replied, ‘Yes, Muhammad I is with me.’ He asked, ‘Has he been called?’ Gabriel said, ‘Yes.’ So the gate was opened and we went over the nearest heaven and there we saw a man sitting with some people on his right and some on his left. When he looked towards his right, he laughed and when he looked toward his left he wept. Then he said, ‘Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son.’ I asked Gabriel, ‘Who is he?’ He replied, ‘He is Adam and the people on his right and left are the souls of his offspring. Those on his right are the people of Paradise and those on his left are the people of Hell and when he looks towards his right he laughs and when he looks towards his left he weeps.’

Then he ascended with me till he reached the second heaven and he (Gabriel) said to its gatekeeper, ‘Open (the gate).’ The gatekeeper said to him the same as the gatekeeper of the first heaven had said and he opened the gate. Anas said: “Abu Dhar added that the Prophet met Adam, Idris, Moses, Jesus and Abraham, he (Abu Dhar) did not mention on which heaven they were but he mentioned that he (the Prophet ) met Adarn on the nearest heaven and Abraham on the sixth heaven. Anas said, “When Gabriel along with the Prophet passed by Idris, the latter said, ‘Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious brother.’ The Prophet asked, ‘Who is he?’ Gabriel replied, ‘He is Idris.” The Prophet added, “I passed by Moses and he said, ‘Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious brother.’ I asked Gabriel, ‘Who is he?’ Gabriel replied, ‘He is Moses.’ Then I passed by Jesus and he said, ‘Welcome! O pious brother and pious Prophet.’ I asked, ‘Who is he?’ Gabriel replied, ‘He is Jesus.

Then I passed by Abraham and he said, ‘Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son.’ I asked Gabriel, ‘Who is he?’ Gabriel replied, ‘He is Abraham. The Prophet added, ‘Then Gabriel ascended with me to a place where I heard the creaking of the pens.” Ibn Hazm and Anas bin Malik said: The Prophet said, “Then Allah enjoined fifty prayers on my followers when I returned with this order of Allah, I passed by Moses who asked me, ‘What has Allah enjoined on your followers?’ I replied, ‘He has enjoined fifty prayers on them.’ Moses said, ‘Go back to your Lord (and appeal for reduction) for your followers will not be able to bear it.’ (So I went back to Allah and requested for reduction) and He reduced it to half. When I passed by Moses again and informed him about it, he said, ‘Go back to your Lord as your followers will not be able to bear it.’ So I returned to Allah and requested for further reduction and half of it was reduced. I again passed by Moses and he said to me: ‘Return to your Lord, for your followers will not be able to bear it. So I returned to Allah and He said, ‘These are five prayers and they are all (equal to) fifty (in reward) for My Word does not change.’ I returned to Moses and he told me to go back once again. I replied, ‘Now I feel shy of asking my Lord again.’ Then Gabriel took me till we ” reached Sidrat-il-Muntaha (Lote tree of; the utmost boundry) which was shrouded in colors, indescribable. Then I was admitted into Paradise where I found small (tents or) walls (made) of pearls and its earth was of musk.”

10 Famous Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

10 Famous Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) Asalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

There is a wide gap between the lives of Muslims today and the lives of the first generation of Muslims. Many of those who study Islam know more about the lives of scholars than they do about the Sahaba and the rightly-guided Caliphs, even though the era of the rightly-guided Caliphs offers all Muslims a rich source of knowledge about all the Islamic sciences. The Sahaba laid the foundations of a strong Islamic nation. The Companions of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saas) are some of Islam’s greatest heroes and played a great role in the history of Islam. Their struggles for the sake of Allah and their complete devotion to Islam are examples that all Muslims can feel inspired by and inshaAllah, emulate.

May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon His final Prophet and his noble Companions. These short descriptions of the lives and merits of these Companions hardly do them any justice. It is highly recommended that each Muslim do some further investigation by reading biographies of the Companions. Here are some facts about only a few of the Prophet’s Companions.

Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq: Abu Bakr was the Prophet’s (saas) best friend, and the first rightly-guided Caliph. He was the only person, other than the Prophet’s wife (Khadijah), who accepted Islam immediately and believed in Muhammad from Islam’s earliest beginnings. Abu Bakr always remained at the Prophet’s side, and he had no reservations about spending his wealth for the sake of Islam and the Muslims. He belonged to a wealthy, well-established family in Mecca, but when he died he had only six hundred dirhams. He used his status in Mecca to protect new converts to Islam when the Quraish were oppressing Muslims. The Companions recognized his superiority, yet he always remained humble and sincere towards all. He is an example of dedication and sacrifice.

Umar Ibn Al-Khattab: ‘Umar was the second Caliph of Islam and one of the closest Companions to the Prophet (saas). He was so firm in his practice of Islam that he usually could sense what was right or wrong before the Prophet (saas) had informed others of it. He used to say to his friends: “If a mule stumbles near the Euphrates River, I fear being questioned by Allah as to why I had not paved the road for it.” ‘Umar is the greatest examples of a just ruler. Before he converted, ‘Umar was a bitter enemy of Islam, but when he entered the fold, the Muslims felt strong enough to withstand any oppression, and began worshipping Allah openly. The Prophet (saas) said of ‘Umar: “Among the Children of Israel who lived before you, there were men who used to be inspired with guidance though they were not Prophets, and if there were any such person amongst my followers, it would be ‘Umar.”

Uthman bin ‘Affan: Uthman accepted Islam in its early beginnings. From the first moment he became a Muslim, Uthman used all his wealth to serve the cause of Islam. He spent most of his resources to satisfy the needs of poor Muslims. Other than Abu Bakr, none of the Prophet’s Companions could surpass him in his financial support of Islam. Uthman was the third rightly-guided Caliph. One of the great accomplishments of his rule was the collection of the Qur’an. Uthman was so distinctively modest that the Prophet (saas) said: “The angels feel shy when they see Uthman.

Ali Ibn Abi Talib: Ali was one of the earliest believers, the first boy to embrace Islam at only twelve years of age, and the fourth Caliph. He lived in the Prophet’s (saas) house and imitated him in all that he did, living a humble life. Ali was especially heroic in the battles he fought for the cause of Islam, earning the nickname “the Lion of Allah”. Ali married the Prophet’s daughter, Fatimah, and they lived a happily together even though they were poor. Allah praised them in the Qur’an for their self-denial. One day, they were having their meal of dry bread, and a beggar knocked on the door. They gave him the dry bread and stayed hungry, because they preferred to satisfy Allah by feeding the beggar

Suhaib ar-Roomi: Suhaib was a slave as a child, taken as a prisoner of war by the Roman army when he was very young. He was taken to Mecca and sold to a noble man who later set him free. Suhaib became a trader and amassed wealth over the following years. He was one of the early believers who embraced Islam when he listened to one of the Prophet’s (saas) lectures. He tried to keep his faith secret, but the pagans tortured him because he was not affiliated with a powerful tribe in Mecca. When Suhaib migrated to Medina, the Quraish told him to surrender all of his wealth and property, or they would detain him. Suhaib left all his wealth and property behind for the sake of Islam. When he told the Prophet (saas) of the deal he made with Quraish to escape, the Prophet said to him twice: “O Suhaib! It was a profitable deal.” He defended the Prophet (saas) in battle, even shielding him with his own body against arrows.

Jabir bin Abdullah: Jabir embraced Islam when he was a young boy. Jabir was orphaned when he found his father’s body mutilated by the pagans at the battle of Uhud. Jabir’s father was a martyr, but he was left with a large debt and seven sisters to care for. Jabir was supported by the Prophet (saas) and his Companions. He sacrificed his happiness for the welfare of his seven sisters. Instead of marrying a virgin, he married an experienced widow who would be more capable of taking care of his sisters. He loved the Prophet (saas) dearly and kept close to him. He was always repeating that the Prophet (saas) taught him that smiling to a brother was a good deed for which a believer would be rewarded by Allah. Although he was extremely poor, he sacrificed the little food he had to the Prophet (saas) who was tying two stones to his stomach to overcome his hunger. As a result, Jabir’s house was blessed, thanks to prayers made by the Prophet (saas). Jabir fought in many battles against the enemies of Islam, and was a dedicated Muslim for the rest of his life.

‘Amr bin Al-‘Aas: ‘Amr bin Al-‘Aas was one of the greatest enemies of Islam before his conversion. He used all of his resources and skills to thwart the efforts of Muhammad (saas) and his Companions. However, he was an intelligent man, and embraced Islam. After submitting himself to Allah, ‘Amr became one of Islam’s greatest heroes. Prophet Muhammad (saas) showed his full trust in ‘Amr’s capabilities and sincerity towards Islam by appointing him as governor of Oman. ‘Amr later led the Muslims to conquer Egypt and establish a strong Islamic state.

Khalid bin Al-Waleed: Khalid bin Al-Waleed was a great hero of Islam. Known as ‘The Sword of Allah,’ he led several battles and was always victorious when he fought for Islam. Before he converted to Islam, he fought with the Quraish against Islam and even took part in torturing some of the weak Muslims, making it impossible for them to live in Mecca. It was Khalid bin Al-Waleed who found the weak spot in the Muslim army in the battle of Uhud and led the pagans to defeat the Muslims. After this, he was appointed the commander of the Quraish army for his military skill and strength. Khalid was eventually humiliated when he lost the Battle of the Trench. It took twenty years for Khalid bin Al-Waleed to convert to Islam, but when he did, he became a true soldier for Allah. He conquered apostates, notably Musailamah Al-Kadhab (the Liar) and restored peace and order to the Arabian Peninsula. He devised military tactics which, by the help of Allah, resulted in defeating the Roman army, subduing the Persians, and purifying Arabia from apostates. When he died, Umar bin Al-Khattab cried and said: “Women would never give birth to one like you.

Abu ‘Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah: The Prophet (saas) publicly named ten men who would be guaranteed Paradise in the Hereafter. One of these fortunate men was Abu ‘Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah. He was one of the earliest to accept Islam in its early days in Mecca. He took part in the migrations to Ethiopia and Medina for the sake of preserving his faith. He fought in all the major battles of Islam and spent most of his life as a soldier for Allah’s cause. He even killed his own father in battle when his father vowed to slay him for accepting Islam. Praising his character, the Prophet (saas) said: “Every Ummah has a trustworthy man; Abu ‘Ubaidah is the trustworthy man of this Ummah.

Bilal bin Rabah: Bilal was one of the earliest converts to Islam in Mecca and one of the slaves who accepted Islam at a time when becoming a Muslim resulted in persecution, or even death. Bilal was an Abyssinian brought to Mecca to be a slave in the house of a Quraishi chief. He was humiliated and oppressed because of his low status and dark skin, yet bore his trials with patience. In his heart, Bilal knew that the idols he was forced to worship would not be able to bring him any good or harm, so when he heard of a new Prophet who called people to worship Allah alone and to treat each other with justice and equality, he became interested in Islam. When his owner, Umayya bin Khalaf, discovered that Bilal had not only accepted Islam, but also spit on an idol in front of the Ka’bah, he tortured Bilal to make him turn away from his newfound faith. Bilal was whipped until his skin would tear and blood streamed out, taken to the desert, wrapped in steel chains and placed underneath a huge rock, and the only words he would say were ‘Allah is One.’ Bilal showed humanity that nothing should be exchanged for the true faith, not even one’s life. One day, Umayya was torturing Bilal particularly heavily, and Abu Bakr came and asked to purchase Bilal. Abu Bakr was persistent and paid a large sum for Bilal, then immediately declared Bilal to be a free man, an example of Islam’s attitude toward slavery. Bilal was treated equally by the Companions, and migrated to Medina for the sake of his faith. In Medina, Bilal announced the call to prayer for the first time in history and became the first Mu’edhin of Islam. With his melodious voice, he would give the call to prayer five times a day for the rest of the Prophet’s (saas) life.

Who are Believers according to Quran?

[9.Surah At-Tawba: Ayah 112]

"They who turn (to Allah), who serve (Him), who praise (Him), who fast, who bow down, who prostrate themselves, who enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and who keep the limits of Allah; and give good news to the believers."

[23. Surah Al-Muminun : Ayah 1-11]

"Successful indeed are the believers, Who are humble in their prayers, And who keep aloof from what is vain, And who are givers of poor-rate, And who guard their private parts, Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blamable, But whoever seeks to go beyond that, these are they that exceed the limits; And those who are keepers of their trusts and their covenant, And those who keep a guard on their prayers; These are they who are the heirs, Who shall inherit the Paradise; they shall abide therein."

[42. Surah Ash-Shura : Ayah 36-38]

"So whatever thing you are given, that is only a provision of this world's life, and what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe and rely on their Lord. And those who. shun the great sins and indecencies, and whenever they are angry they forgive. And those who respond to their Lord and keep up prayer, and their rule is to take counsel among themselves, and who spend out of what We have given them. "

[24. Surah An-Nur : Ayah 30-31]

"Say to the believing men that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is Aware of what they do.
And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful."
