Story of Prophet Isa (as)

Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) in Islam, Maryam (Mary, mother of Jesus) and Muslims
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) in IslamMuslim beliefs and traditions still remain a mystery to many non-Muslims. Between ignorance and outright malicious lies, Muslims need to find a common ground with others. Non-Muslims, especially Christians, are often surprised to discover that Muslims also believe in Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). This web page aims to not only provide the Islamic perspective on this great Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) and Maryam (Mary), the mother of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him), but also to bring forward the common ground between Muslims and Christians.
Muslims are required by Allah (SWT) to believe in all of the Prophets. These include Prophet Isa (Jesus Christ) and Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) peace be upon them. The Noble Qur'an, the Islamic holy book, also instructs Muslims to believe in the books revealed to every Prophet as well. The book given to Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) is called Injeel in the Noble Qur'an.
According to the Noble Qur'an, Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was one of Allah's (SWT) most beloved messengers, a precursor to Prophet Muhammad (61:6) and was sent to guide the Children of Israel. In the Noble Qur'an, stories about the life and teachings of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) are abundant. The Noble Qur'an recalls his miraculous birth, his teachings, the miracles he performed by Allah's (SWT) permission, and his life as a great prophet of Allah (SWT). The Noble Qur'an speaks of Maryam (Mary) not only as the mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him), but as a righteous woman in her own right.
Muslims believe that Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) was the son of Maryam (Mary), and was immaculately conceived without the intervention of a human father. The Noble Qur'an describes that an angel appeared to Maryam (Mary), to announce to her the "gift of a holy son" (19:19). Maryam (Mary) was astonished at the news, and asked: "How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?" (19:20). When the angel explained to her that she had been chosen for the service of Allah (SWT), and that Allah (SWT) had ordained the matter, she devoutly submitted herself to His will.
The Noble Qur'an further describes that Maryam (Mary, mother of Jesus) retreated from her people (outside the city), and gave birth to Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) underneath a remote date palm tree. The date palm tree miraculously provided nourishment for Maryam (Mary) during labor and birth. (See Chapter 19 of the Noble Qur'an for the entire story. The chapter has aptly been named "The Chapter of Maryam (Mary, mother of Jesus)")
However, the Noble Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that Prophet Adam, the first human being, was born with neither a human mother nor a human father. Therefore Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) miraculous birth affords him no higher standing or presumed partnership with God. When God ordains a matter, He merely says, "Be" and it is so. "The similitude of Jesus before God is as that of Adam. He created him from dust, then said to him: "Be!" And he was" (3:59). In Islam, Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) is regarded as a human prophet and messenger of God, not part of God Himself. The Noble Qur'an also denies that Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) was crucified.
10 brief points Christians should know about Jesus and Muslims Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him)
1. Muslims love Prophet Jesus. We also love Prophet Abraham, Prophet Moses, and Prophet Noah, to name just a few other Prophets Muslims revere. May God's peace be upon all of these great messengers of God.
2. Muslims also love the mother of Prophet Jesus, the Virgin Mary. We believe she was a pious and noble woman chosen over all of the women of the world.
3. Muslims believe that Prophet Jesus was born miraculously of a virgin mother and no father. His birth is miraculous like the birth of Prophet Adam, the first human being, who was created with neither mother nor father.
4. Muslims do not believe that Prophet Jesus was the son of God. God is so powerful and self-sufficient that He does not need a son or any kind of partner.
5. In Arabic Bible the name for God is Allah. Therefore all Arab Christian call God Allah as Muslim do as well.
6. Prophet Jesus did not die on the cross. Rather, God saved him as his enemies were confused about him. Prophet Jesus was taken up by God to Heaven.
7. Prophet Jesus is called Isa (pronounced Eesa) in Arabic and the spirit of God (Roohullah) is his title.
8. Prophet Jesus performed miracles by the Will of God, like healing the blind and those with leprosy.
9. Prophet Jesus prayed to the same God as all Prophets and we Muslims pray to.
10. Prophet Jesus will return before the end of the world during the time of Imam al-Mahdi, the embodiment of the Messiah or the saviour.
Jesus: Prophet of Islam, Jesus in Noble Qur'an, Truth about Jesus Christ, Jesus Sayings, Stories
Imam Ridha (as) said, 'The most terrifying events for creatures are three: the day one is born and comes out of his mother's belly and sees the world, the day he dies and sees the afterlife and its people, and the day he is raised and sees laws he did not see in this world, and Allah (SWT) made Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) secure in these three events and protected him from fear, and He said:
"And peace on him on the day he was born, and on the day he dies, and on the day he is raised to life." (Noble Qur'an 19:15)
And Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) the son of Maryam (Mary) made himself secures in these three events, and he said:
"And peace on me on the day I was born, and on the day I die, and on the day I am raised to life." (Noble Qur'an 19:33)
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) lived for thirty-three years; he was not killed nor crucified, but it was made to appear so to the Christians. On the night of the twenty-first of Ramadan he was raised while there were nine thousands three hundred thirteen angles with him. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) was raised from the earth alive and his soul was taken between heaven and earth, then he was raised to heaven and his soul was returned to him. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) will come down to the world before the Resurrection day with the twelfth Imam al-Mahdi of the Household of the Prophet, and invite the people to Allah (SWT).
In the resurrection will come a man in a group and the angels will be around him with wings outspread and the light will be in front of them. Then the people of the Garden will crane their necks toward him and say, 'Who is this who is thus allowed by Allah?' The angels will say, 'This is the spirit of Allah and His word! This is Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) the son of Mary!'
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) once said about himself, "I sleep while I have nothing and I rise while I have nothing, and yet there is no one on earth more wealthy than I," and Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said another time, "I began the morning with my Lord, the Blessed and Supreme, above me and the fire (of hell) before me and death in pursuit of me. I have not obtained that for which I wished and I cannot keep away the things I hate. So who of the poor is poorer than I?"
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) passed by a man who was blind, leprous and paralytic, and Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) heard him giving thanks and saying, "Praise be to Allah (SWT) Who has protected me from the trials with which He afflicts the majority of men." Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said, "What trial remains which has not been visited upon you?" He said, "He protected me from a trial which is the greatest of trials, and that is disbelief." Then Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) touched him, and Allah (SWT) cured him from his illnesses and beautified his face. Then he became a companion of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) and worshipped with him.
These two stories about him suffice to show his humility. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) served a meal to the Apostles, and when they had eaten it, he himself washed them, and another time he stood up and washed their feet. They said, "It would have been more proper for us to have done this, O Spirit of Allah." Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) replied, "Verily, it is more fitting for one with knowledge to serve the people. Indeed, I humbled myself only so that you may humble yourselves among the people after me even as I have humbled myself among you."
The conversations of Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) with the disciples are very interesting. They asked him, "O spirit of Allah, so with whom should we keep company?" Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said, "He the sight of whom reminds you of Allah (SWT), his speech increases your knowledge and his action makes you desirous of the other world." And a man asked Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) the son of Mary, "Which people is the best?" Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) took two handfuls of earth and said, "Which of these is the best? The people are created from earth, so the most honorable of them is the most God wary."
Almighty God also introduced Himself to Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him), He described His endless mercy to him, and He gave him necessary instructions. Once He said to him, "O Isa (Jesus)! I do not forget those who forget Me, so how could I forget those who remember Me! I am not stingy with those who disobey Me, so how could I be stingy with those who obey Me." And He said another time, "Be to the people like the earth below in meekness, like the flowing water in generosity, and like the sun and the moon in mercy, which shine on the good and sinner alike."
Stories of Prophets of Islam, Story of Prophet Isa (as) (Prophet Jesus and Imam al-Mahdi)
Story of Prophet Isa (as)A man accompanied Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) the son of Maryam (Mary) and said that he would go with him. They continued along until they came to a river. They sat and started to eat. They had three loaves of bread. They ate two of them and one remained.
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) went to the river, drank some water and returned. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) did not find the third loaf, so he asked the man who had taken that loaf. The man said that he did not know.
They continued until they came to a doe followed by two fawns. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) beckoned one of the fawns, killed it, roasted it and they ate it. Then Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) addressed the fawn [that had been eaten,] saying, "Live!" It came to life and went. Then Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said to the man, "By the God Who has shown you this miracle, who took that loaf of bread?" The man said that he did not know.
They continued until they reached a lake. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) took the hand of the man and led him over the water. When they reached the other side, Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said, "By the One Who has shown you this miracle, who took that loaf of bread?" The man said that he did not know.
They continued until they reached a desert. They sat down. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) gathered some sand or dust and said, "By the permission of Allah (SWT), be Gold!" It became Gold. He divided it into three portions.
Then Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said, "One third is for me, one third for you, and one third for whoever took that loaf of bread."
The man said, "Alright, I took that loaf of bread."
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) said, "Then all of this Gold is yours." Then he left him.
The man encountered two other men in the desert. They wanted to take his Gold and kill him. He said, "Let us divide the Gold into three portions." They sent one of them to the village to buy food.
The one who went said to himself, "Why should I let them have portions of this wealth? I shall put some poison into the food, and kill them." So, he poisoned the food.
The other two said, "Why should we give a third of this wealth to him. When he comes back, let us kill him, and divide the rest of the wealth between us."
When he returned, they attacked him and killed him. Then they ate the poisoned food and died. The wealth remained in the desert with the three dead men beside it.
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) passed them and saw the situation. He said to his disciples, "This is the world, so beware of it!"
Stories of Prophets of Islam, To bring a fool to his senses (Story of Prophet Isa (as))
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) was once seen running away from a man. People were surprised to see him running away. Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) did not run away from anything or anybody. He was known for his goodness, humbleness and friendliness.
They asked him: "Isa, spirit of Allah, why are you running away from that man?"
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) replied: "I am running away from a fool."
People were still more surprised, they knew that Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) was a prophet. He had cured the sick. He had even brought the dead to life. So they said: "But Isa, spirit of Allah, you have power to bring dead to life."
Prophet Isa (Jesus, peace upon him) smiled and said: "True, I have brought dead to life. But I find it difficult to bring a fool to his senses."

Prophet Stories

Success in this life and the Hereafter depends on your Correct Decisions
Prophet Dawood (as) was a prophet of Allah (swt) and a king. He had nineteen sons and every one of them wanted to inherit his throne. He agreed with one of his wives to nominate their eldest son to the throne. Allah (swt) commanded him not to appoint anyone, but to wait for His order.
One day, he was asked to decide in a dispute between Elia, who was a cultivator, and his neighbor, Yohanna, who was a herdsman. Elia complained that the sheep belonging to Yohanna had grazed in his cornfield and had eaten the vegetables, causing him a great loss. Yohanna admitted that it had happened at night while he was asleep. By the command of Allah (swt), Prophet Dawood (as) called all his sons and told them that whoever decided the case correctly, would become his heir.
Sulayman / Solomon (as), who was the youngest son, ruled that Yohanna would have to surrender to Elia the milk and the wool that he would obtain from his sheep during that year. Prophet Dawood (as) asked him how he had decided in this manner.
Sulayman (as) replied, "The sheep did not eat the plants, but only the fruits; thus only the produce from the sheep should make up for the loss."
Allah (swt) informed the Prophet Dawood (as) that the ruling given by Sulayman (as) was the best and he should be made his heir. Dawood (as) gathered all his sons in the presence of the learned people and chiefs of tribes and declared, by Allah's command, Sulayman (as) to be a prophet of Allah (swt) and his heir to the throne.
Prophet Dawood (as) died and Sulayman (as) became a king at the age of thirteen.
Islamic Stories of Prophets: Say 'Insha Allah' before taking any decision
Once, the Prophet Sulayman (as) said that he would have a son from each of his wives. Since he did not leave the fulfillment of his desire upon the will of Allah (swt) by saying Insha Allah, only one of his wives bore him a child, and even then, it was stillborn. When Sulayman (as) realized his mistake, he became very sorry and asked Allah (swt) to forgive him and to grant him a kingdom which no one else would have after him. Allah (swt) accepted these prayers and granted him a mighty kingdom.
He also gave him power over the Jinn's, birds, animals, and the wind. They all had to obey his orders. Allah (swt) also taught Sulayman (as) the languages of every living creature on earth.
At the command of Sulayman (as), they built huge temples, fortresses, towers, palaces made of glass, large basins of water reserves, and immovable cooking pots.
Don't Forget the Might and Glory of Allah in any Circumstances particularly when you face so-called World Powers.
Once, Prophet Sulayman (as) and his army of Jinn's and animals were passing over the valley of the ants. Seeing the pomp and glory of the army, the chief of the ants alerted all the ants to get into their holes so that the army would not trample over them. With the help of the wind, Prophet Sulayman (as) heard what the chief of the ants had said. He smiled and ordered his army not to move forward until the ants had got into their holes.
He then addressed the chief of the ants, "How could my army harm you and your kind when we were passing well above you in the air? And don't you know that I am the prophet of Allah and would never hurt anyone unjustly?"
The ant replied, "O Prophet of Allah, I did not warn them because of any harm that they would suffer, but I was afraid they would forget the glory of Allah (swt) after seeing your army."
Use your all Powers to bring Humankind to the Right path
In spite of his wealth, glory, and vast empire, Prophet Sulayman (as) remained a humble and devoted servant of Allah (swt). He spent his nights in prayers and fasted during the days. He used his power and might only in the way of Allah (swt) to bring humankind to the right path. For his livelihood, he used to make baskets and sell them in the market; and with the money he obtained, he bought food and shared it with the poor.
One day, when he was inspecting the birds, he noticed that a bird called Hudhud (Hoopoe) was not present. He said, "Where is Hudhud? I will punish him severely if he remains absent without a good reason."
Shortly after that, Hudhud arrived and told Prophet Sulayman (as) that he had flown over the land of Saba (Sheba) where he had seen a beautiful woman ruling over the people. Her name was Bilqees. She had plenty of wealth, a strong army and a throne made of gold, diamonds and other precious stones. He saw her and the people worshipping the sun, instead of Allah (swt).
Prophet Sulayman (as) was very pleased with Hudhud and gave him a letter to deliver to Bilqees. Hudhud flew to the land of Saba and dropped the letter in the lap of Bilqees while she was in the palace.
When Bilqees received the letter, she called her advisors and said, "I have received an honorable letter from Sulayman. It begins In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful and it reads: "Accept Allah (swt) and worship only Him. I am his prophet, believe in what I say and accept my command".
Islamic Stories of Prophets: Don't Offer or Receive Bribe
Bilqees then asked her advisors to advise her as to what she should do. They replied, "We are very strong and have a powerful army to fight against Sulayman, but the decision is yours and we will obey your order."
Bilqees was wise and decided not to fight Prophet Sulayman (as). Instead, she sent him valuable gifts to see what he would do. When the messengers of Bilqees arrived in the land of Prophet Sulayman (as) and saw his glory and his wealth, they were struck with wonder. They thought the gifts they had brought were worthless.
Prophet Sulayman (as) became very angry when he was presented with the gifts and said, "What! Do you offer me wealth? What Allah (swt) has given me is more superior to all the wealth on this earth. Go back to your queen with her gifts and tell her that I will soon march to conquer her land with a huge army."
When Bilqees heard what had happened, she decided to surrender herself to Prophet Sulayman (as) and make preparations to go meet him.
Seek Knowledge wherever you are: It can do Wonders
Meanwhile, on the orders of Prophet Sulayman (as), a palace of glass was built in honor of Bilqees. Even the floor was made of glass and water was put under it with different kinds of fish. The whole floor looked like a pool of water without the glass showing on top.
Sulayman (as) then asked who could bring the throne of Bilqees to him. Jinn stepped forward and said, "I will bring the throne before you rise from your seat." One man, who was given a little knowledge by Allah (swt), said, "I will bring it in the twinkling of an eye." When Prophet Sulayman (as) saw the throne before him, he praised Allah (swt) and thanked Him for His favors.
Admit your Mistake whenever you are wrong
When Bilqees arrived, she was amazed to see her throne and realized what power Allah (swt) had given to Prophet Sulayman (as). She then entered the palace through the courtyard whose floor was made of glass. Thinking that it was a pool of water, she raised her clothes to pass through it. When Prophet Sulayman (as) informed her, what it was, she was overwhelmed with wonder and accepted him to be a prophet of Allah (swt). She said, "O Lord, I have wronged myself in worshipping the sun instead of you. I therefore give in myself with Sulayman to You, the Lord of the Worlds."
Prophet Sulayman (as) then married Bilqees and thereafter she returned to her land, where he visited her frequently. The people of Saba who were sun-worshippers, were converted to believe in Allah (swt) and to worship none other than Him.
Islamic Stories of Prophets: Prepare for Death. It can strike anytime
One day, Prophet Sulayman (as), with the staff in his land, was viewing the kingdom around him, when he saw a young man approaching him. He was surprised and asked him, "Who are you and who gave you permission to enter the palace?"
The visitor replied, "I have come in with the permission of Allah (swt), the owner of the universe. I am the angel of death and Allah has sent me to take your life away."
Prophet Sulayman (as) said, "Then allow me to go home to prepare for death and rest on my bed". The Angel said: "No".
While Prophet Sulayman (as) stood leaning on his staff, his soul left him. His body remained standing for such a long time that the people and the Jinn's believed him to have become a spirit or a magician. They carried on with the work entrusted to them by Prophet Sulayman (as), until Allah (swt) caused the ants to eat away the staff he was leaning on and his body fell to the ground. Prophet Sulayman (as) ruled for forty years and died at the age of fifty-three.

Pride in Islam, Arrogance - Kibr/Takabbur is a barrier to Paradise

Pride in Islam, Arrogance - Kibr/Takabbur is a barrier to Paradise

A proud and arrogant person regards himself better and superior to others and by assuming vain and wishful thoughts in his mind, adopts the conduct of Shaitan (Satan) who said: "I have been created of fire while Adam has been created of earth and fire possesses superiority over earth." The first sin to have been committed in the world of creation was arrogance on the part of Shaitan (Satan).
This pride and prejudice on the part of Satan is what caused his downfall - and has the potential to affect each and every one of us. Satan felt that his physical makeup of 'smoke-less fire' was of a loftier composition, and that being made of fire, he had the potential and was naturally inclined to 'ascend' (just as fire does), whereas the makeup of Adam was of 'earth', a heavier compound, and that his natural inclination was to the base, lower desires, and to clinging to the 'earth'.
Thus, as for it being a vice, there can be no doubt or skepticism. Proud and arrogant individuals look down upon others and anticipate others to greet them and exhibit respect and deference towards them, always nurturing aspects of their superiority and greatness within their minds. This "puffed up" feeling which imparts a sense of "touch me not" is called pride (Kibr/Takabbur).
The condition of conceit and of one who considers himself to be greater than others, so long as it stays inwardly and has no outward manifestation, it is pride. If it gets out through the senses, it is called arrogance.
Arrogance is a mental state causing self-admiration and haughtiness against others in words or deeds. It is censured and dispraised in many texts in Noble Qur'an and Sunnah:
Truly Allah knows what they hide and what they manifest; surely He does not love the proud. Noble Qur'an (16:23)
Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw) says: "He who has in his heart as much faith as a grain of mustard seed will not enter hell, and he who has in his heart as much pride as a grain of mustard seed will not enter paradise." Hence, Pride (Kibr/Takabbur) is a barrier to Paradise.
A proud man will not tolerate any other to be on equal terms with himself. In private and in public he expects that all should assume a respectful attitude towards him and, acknowledging his superiority, treat him as a higher being. They should greet him first; make way for him wherever he walks; when he speaks everyone should listen to him and never try to oppose him. He is a genius and people are like asses. They should be grateful to him, seeing that he is so condescending.
Virtues are the doors of Paradise, but pride and self-esteem lock them all. So long as man feels elated he will not like for others what he likes for himself. His self-esteem will deprive him of humility, which is the essence of righteousness. He will neither be able to discard enmity and envy, resentment and wrath, slander and scorn, nor will he be able to cultivate truth and sincerity, and calmly listen to any advice. In short, there is no evil which a proud man will not inevitably do in order to preserve his elation and self-esteem.
Being proud about ones own piety is a major sin. This pride can make all the prayers and supplications void. If a person understands the Greatness of Allah (SWT), then he will not be proud and vain at his exertions at prayer. The endowments of the munificent Allah (SWT) are so great that it is impossible to count His Blessings.
Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (as) who cites Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw) in a tradition in which Hazrat Musa (Moses) son of Imran asks Satan. "Tell me about the sin which, when a son of Adam commits, you overtake him." Satan replied, "It is when he is proud of himself, thinks too much of his good deeds and his sin looks small in his eyes." It is known that when Satan overtakes someone, the result will be more sinning.
Imam Ali Reza (as) says that a pious person from Bani Israel offered intense prayers for forty years. Then he offered a sacrifice to Allah (SWT) that was not accepted. The person was disconsolate with sadness for his failure. He cursed his psyche blaming it for his failure. He received a Revelation that blaming his psyche and accepting the shortcomings pleased Allah (SWT) more than the prayers spread over the long period of forty years. For this reason Allah (SWT) accepted his long years of penance.
Imam Mohammed Baqir (as) says that two persons entered the mosque. One was pious and the other a transgressor. When they emerged from the mosque after the prayer, the transgressor was pious and the person with piety had turned a transgressor. The reason was that the pious person came out of the mosque with pride at his piety and the transgressor was penitent at his past misdeeds.
Imam Ali (as) says: "The sin that makes you sad and repentant is more liked by Allah (SWT) than the good deed which turns you arrogant."
Positive Pride in Islam: Do you want Honor, Power and Glory in this World and in the Hereafter?
Verily, then to Allah belongs all honour, power and glory. Noble Qur'an (4:139)
Therefore, whoever desires (Al-Izzah) honor, power and glory in this world and the next, let him be obedient towards Allah (SWT).
Imam Ali (as) says, that he is proud that Allah (SWT) is his lord and that he is Allah's servant.
As Muslims we are proud of our identity, heritage and tradition. Because we Muslims take pride in keeping our homes, gardens clean, our places of worship appealing both to the young and old. We Muslims take pride in respecting parents, elders, assisting neighbors, helping poor by giving charity. We Muslim Women take pride in observing Hijab (Islamic dress).
"Pride, the result of not remembering our status in relationship to our Creator, can take various forms. In each of these it is an attempt to be god."
The main push behind pride and prejudice is nothing other than the human being thinking himself to be "god" and that he feels he is better than others; however, if we keep the relationship between ourselves and our Creator in mind, and that He is the only one "entitled" to 'pride', then we bring ourselves back "down to earth" and appreciate that we are all from the same source, and that even though we have differences mostly based on incidental issues, the only source of being "better" than one another (which too cannot be fully judged) is our awareness, consciousness, and acceptance of God and all that He gives to us.
Imam Ali (as) says: I wonder at the arrogance of a haughty and vain person. Yesterday he was only a drop of semen and tomorrow he will turn into a corpse. Also, it is astonishing if son of Adam is proud, when his beginning is a sperm and his end is a decaying corpse (dead body).
The arrogant and proud should recognize and realize his reality: his origin is a dirty sperm and his end is stinky carrion. Between these two, man is weak and feeble. Hunger and thirst exhaust him, ailment and sickness overcome him, poverty and harm afflict him, and death and wear will inevitably befall him. Man cannot provide benefits and cannot save himself from misfortunes.
Overconfidence is a bad thing:
Confidence is a great thing. It allows us to get past our doubts and take action. So why is slightly too much of it so bad? Take a look at the example of Azazeel.
His name was Azazeel. He is also known as Iblees. He used to pray a lot and even used to give lectures to the angels. One day there was a notice in the heavens which said that someone was going to be ordered out of the heavens. All the angels were worried because they thought it might be one of them. They all went to Jibreel (Gabriel) who was one of the most important angels to ask him, whether he could do anything. Jibreel (Gabriel) said he too was worried because it might be himself. Jibreel (Gabriel) suggested that they go to Azazeel because he was very clever.
Azazeel told them not to worry at all, he would pray to Allah (SWT) for all of them. He forgot himself thinking he was the best and it could never be him. As a result of overconfidence, he became the cursed Satan and he was ordered out of heaven.
Imam Moosa Kazim (as) says: "O Son! Don't delay in offering your prayers. Nor should you be overconfident of the acceptance of your prayers and feel proud of your efforts at piety. We cannot offer prayers and obedience to Allah commensurate with His Blessings."
Summary, as human beings and believers, we need to ensure that we do not repeat the sin which resulted in the fall of Satan - we need to treat all of the children of Adam as human beings and not be judgmental of things such as skin color, tribal affiliations, language, place of birth, economic worth, social status, or even religion, as these are all merely ways for us to "know the another" rather than being means of shunning one another. After all, did Imam Ali (as) not say that, "People are of two types - they are either your brothers in faith or your equals in humanity."
Example of Pride in Islam: Walid ibn Mughairah
Three years after having been appointed as a prophet and with only a handful of people having accepted Islam, it was revealed to Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw): "Openly proclaim your Prophethood and disregard the ridicule and troubles from the polytheists, for We shall protect you from their evils."
One of the opponents was Walid ibn Mughairah. Once, Jibreel (Gabriel) the divine Archangel, was with Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw) when Walid happened to pass by. Seeing him, Jibreel (Gabriel) asked Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw): "This Walid ibn Mughairah, is he of those who ridicule you?"
When Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw) replied in the affirmative, Jibreel (Gabriel) pointed towards Walid's foot.
Walid continued walking until he reached the place where a person from the tribe of Khuzaah was engaged in sharpening arrows. Walid stepped on the sharp splinters and chippings lying on the ground, some of which penetrated into the heel of his foot. His heel was badly bruised as blood began to flow. Walid's pride prevented him from bending down and plucking the splinters out of his heel. On reaching his home, he heaved himself into a chair and dropped off to sleep while his daughter slept on the floor beside the chair.
Meanwhile, the blood gushed out so profusely from Walid's wound that it reached the mattress of his daughter who woke up from her sleep. She asked her slave-girl why she had not shut the lid of the water-skin.
Walid explained, "This is not the water from the water-skin. It is the blood of your father."
He then dictated his will and left this world - departing for Hell.
Do not walk proudly on the earth; your feet cannot tear apart the earth nor are you as tall as the mountains. Noble Qur'an (17:37)
Do not scornfully turn your face away from people. Do not walk around puffed-up with pride; Allah does not love arrogant and boastful people. Noble Qur'an (31:18)
Pride in Islam (Kibr/Takabbur): A flying Tortoise
Long ago there were two Geese who regularly visited a pond to eat Fish. The Geese always had a chat with the lonely Tortoise living in the pond. They spent many days talking about different things and their acquaintance grew into friendship.
One day, when the Geese realized there were no more Fish in the pond, they decided to migrate to a new and larger pond up north. They conveyed their decision to their friend, the lonely Tortoise. The Tortoise felt sad and expressed his wish to go along with the Geese.
The Geese thought this is a very good idea. "Why don't we take lonely Tortoise along with us? Then we all can live together forever!"
The Tortoise was delighted, but soon realized the problem. "How can I go with you? Because I cannot fly."
The Tortoise was very disappointed that he would not be able to go with the Geese.
The Geese came up with a solution, "Don't worry. We have thought of a way to solve this problem. We will hold a stick between us. Hold onto the middle of the stick with your mouth. This way, we all can fly to our new location."
But, warned one Goose, "Our plan is good, but you have to be very careful. At no time during our journey you should open your mouth, for, if you do, you will fall from the sky and be smashed to death on the ground."
The Tortoise thought for a while and agreed to be sure to keep his mouth champed round the stick all throughout the journey," he said.
Once they were all set, the Geese and the Tortoise set off on their journey northwards. As they flew, they had to pass through many villages, where people came running out to see this strange sight.
"Look at the Tortoise. See how the Geese carry him between them." Shouted the children.
The Tortoise wanted to tell them that he was going with his friends to a new pond and that there was nothing strange in it, but he remembered his friends warning and kept his mouth shut.
Village after village, people ran after the strange flight. "A flying Tortoise!" some shouted.
The Tortoise soon began to swell with pride.
He thought to himself, "I am so great. All the villagers are running out to see me. If these Geese had not come with me, no one would have ever noticed them."
Every village that they passed, the Tortoise was greeted with cheering and shouting. Finally the Tortoise could contain himself no more. He opened his mouth to speak, "I am ..."
As soon as he opened his mouth, his hold on the stick was lost and he came hurtling through the air and fell on a rock with a loud crack. The poor Tortoise died on the spot.
The Geese flew sadly away. "If only he had not been so proud," they thought, "he would have been living happily with us."
Moral of the Story - "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." or simply, "Pride comes before the fall." Bible, Proverbs (16:18)
Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (saw) says: "Even if you do not commit any sins, I fear that you may fall into something which is worse: pride! pride!"

Hadiths regarding Animals

[Sahih Muslim : Book 26,  Number 5570]

Nafi'
(Radi Allah Anhu) reported from 'Abdullah (Radi Allah Anhu) that Allah's Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said:
"A woman was punished because she had kept a cat tied until it died, and (as a punishment of this offence) she was thrown into the Hell. She had not provided it with food, or drink, and had not freed her so that she could eat the insects of the earth."

[Sahih Muslim : Book 26,  Number 5577]

Abu Huraira
(Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah's Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam)  as sayings:
"A person suffered from intense thirst while on a journey, when he found a well. He climbed down into it and drank (water) and then came out and saw a dog lolling its tongue on account of thirst and eating the moistened earth. The person said: This dog has suffered from thirst as I had suffered from it. He climbed down into the well, filled his shoe with water, then caught it in his mouth until he climbed up and made the dog drink it. So Allah appreciated this act of his and pardoned him. Then (the Companions around him) said: Allah's Messenger
(sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam)
, is there for us a reward even for (serving) such animals? He said: Yes, there is a reward for service to every living animal."

[Sahih Muslim : Book 26,  Number 5578]

Abu Huraira
(Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah's Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam)  as saying:
"A prostitute saw a dog moving around a well on a hot day and hanging out its tongue because of thirst. She drew water for it in her shoe and she was pardoned (for this act of hers)."

[Sahih Muslim : Book 26,  Number 5579]

Abu Huraira
(Radi Allah Anhu) reported Allah's Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam)  as saying:
"There was a dog moving around a well whom thirst would have killed. Suddenly a prostitute from the prostitutes of Bani Isra'il happened to see it and she drew water in her shoe and made it drink, and she was pardoned because of this."

Laylatul Qadr --The Night of Power

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power:

And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is?

The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.

Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by God's permission,

on every errand: Peace!...This until the rise of morn!

Surah 97 The Holy Qur’an:

The Holy Qur'an contains a short surah dedicated to Laylatul Qadr.
Surah Al-Qadr is the 97th surah and consists of five verses. However,

these short verses carry great meaning and guidance.

They tell us all we need to know about the essence and spirit of Laylatul Qadr.
Laylatul Qadr falls sometime within the last 10 days of Ramadhan.

"Seek it in Ramadan in the last ten nights. For verily, it is during the odd nights,

the twenty-first, or the twenty-third, or the twenty-fifth, or the twenty-seventh,

or the twenty-ninth, or during the last night."

-Sahih Hadith Ahmad 5:318

Laylatul Qadr is the most blessed night. A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good. If an individual wants to obey his Lord, increase the good deeds in his record and have all past sins forgiven, they should take part in Laylatul Qadr.

“Whoever stays up (in prayer and remembrance of Allah) on the Night of Qadr fully believing (in Allah’s promise of reward for that night) and hoping to seek reward (from Allah alone and not from people), he shall be forgiven for his past sins.” Sahih Hadith Bukhari / Muslim

We should strive to find this night, and then pass it in worship and obedience. If this is done for the sake of Allah, with sincerity, then all past sins will be forgiven. However, if a person misses out on worship during Laylatul Qadr they truly are a deprived person.

This night is full of reward and blessing and is equivalent to a thousand nights of worship. Anyone who takes part in Laylatul Qadr will have worshipped an equivalent of eighty three years and three months. It is as if a person has spent an entire lifetime in non-stop worship.

“The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.” 97:3 The Holy Quran

"Allah's Messenger, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, looked back at the previous communities and saw that his community lived for a much shorter period in comparison to them. He was concerned about how his community would be able to gain as many rewards as those of the previous communities. So when Allah the Exalted saw the concerns in the heart of His Beloved, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, then he, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, was given Laylatul-Qadr, which is more virtuous than a thousand months."

(Imam Malik, Muatta)

Worship during this night can take on many forms.
Here are a few suggestions to help you through Laylatul Qadr:
• Plan ahead if you are working. If you are going to spend
a night awake in worship, book the following day off.

• Take regular breaks during the night to avoid getting over-exhausted.

Try switching between different forms of worship instead.

• Perform Itikaaf (seclusion in a mosque for worship) –

If possible, take a vacation for the last 10 days of Ramadhan.

If you cannot stay at your local mosque ask family or friends to help out

during your Itikaaf at home. If you cannot spend all 10 days in Itikaaf,

then do as many days as you can - even if it is only one day.

• Increase the recitation of the Qur'an, and reflect on the meaning of the verses, \especially the verses used in Salah. This will help you concentrate.

• Increase Salah (prayer).

• Find out if there are any events organised, and take your family along.

Doing all of the above activities may be too much to do throughout the night
but is far better than social gatherings and meaningless talk that we stay awake for.
If your Arabic is not very strong then there are many good English translations of Qur'an
and Hadith, which can be used instead.

Other useful reading might include books of tafsir (Qura’n commentary),

books on the lives of the Prophets (upon whom be peace), and books of fiqh

(Islamic jurisprudence) as well as Du’a books.

The days of Laylatul-Qadr are an important time for worship, especially the last 10 days. We should pray sincerely from our hearts in order to be saved from the hellfire.
This is a good opportunity not only to pray for ourselves but also for our fellow brothers

and sisters, for if we can not do anything else then our prayers will help.

Ibn Abbas (RA) heard the Prophet (SAAWS) advising someone, saying,
“Take advantage of five before five: You’re youth before your old age,

your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty,

your free time before you become occupied, and your life before your death.”

May Allah help us to purify our hearts, strengthen our faith,
and enable us to meet every challenge, and overcome every difficulty
in our lives. May Allah allow us to serve Him with sincerity in our work,
study, professional, business, family and social lives.

When the time comes for us finally to return to Him,
may Allah admit us to the companionship of those whom He loves
